Capital management involves the risk that the Group fails to maintain sufficient resources to cover potential losses and thereby does not meet its internal or regulatory capital requirements either at Group, subsidiary or branch level.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing independent risk oversight of capital risk management facing to Financial Resource Group, specialized in Global Markets. The Financial Resource Group is specialized in optimizing Global Market RWA and the candidate in this position will be performing second line of defense activities related to the capital optimization.

The selected candidate will be required to oversee the risk-weighted assets and regulatory capital measurement processes for Group and Europe, to ensure efficient and appropriate management of the firm’s capital. Additionally the role holder will be actively involved from a Capital Risk perspective in controls, limits and the framework for capital metrics (internal / external), focused on both current and new regulatory metrics.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the end-to-end risk-weighted asset (RWA) and regulatory capital measurement processes, to ensure efficient and appropriate management of our capital, during BAU and stress
  • Provide details analysis in terms of what if, stressed RWA to Financial Resource Group
  • Monitor capital risk environment and HSBC risks exposures vs. established limits, investigate risk events and propose new MI reports
  • Support the concrete deliveries of the Financial Resource Group/Front office by providing inputs on What if analysis and RWA optimization
  • Work with other functions to establish control and governance best practices and accountability for the regulatory capital process
  • Establish strong relationships with senior stakeholders across the business, advise and provide constructive challenge to the first line of defence on capital risks and decisions
  • Assist in defining and providing constructive challenge to the Financial Resource GM Group
  • Maintain an active and open dialogue and partner with the various stream lead by the Group in terms of optimizing RWA
  • Provide guidance and proposals on setting policy and risk appetite to the Risk Steward

Requirements:

  • A post-graduate degree in relevant numerate subject
  • Strong understanding of global financial markets and products
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of balance sheet, income statement dynamics and liquidity risk issues
  • Strong knowledge of risk-related regulations, their application/impact in the banking industry with a specific understanding of monetary policy as well as key capital regulations
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of key market, capital and liquidity risk drivers
  • Experience of managing RWA optimization and Funding
  • Understands the strategies of the Group lines and demonstrate deep business knowledge
  • Network across HSBC Group & the Banking industry
  • A high level of professional competence which helps to determine solutions around appropriate risk measures, risk processes, risk monitoring and management
  • Ability to form effective relationships and achieve influence at the most senior level in the organisation
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, including the capacity to articulate the case for risk management in the language of business
  • Strong leadership and management ability including ability to lead change, and to develop and retain critical talent
  • Experience of working across all levels of the organization to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implications of risk at both a strategic level and at the business unit level
  • Exposure to demanding operational environments to gain insight into effective risk management applications
  • Experience of creating and leading a sizeable team and of effecting strategic change
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing demands
