About the project

Join our team! We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our CRQ team to help us model operational risk arising from cybersecurity related events. You will be a part of the interdisciplinary team consisting of quants and cyber subject matter experts. We use a mixture of probabilistic risk assessment, uncertainty quantification, operational risk modelling, and decision sciences techniques to define quantitative measures of HSBC resilience against cyber threats. This helps our stakeholders to better monitor and manage cyber security risk.

Your responsibilities

  • Cybersecurity Risk Quantification (CRQ) – development, implementation and management of a mathematical model calculating the impact of improvements made to our control environment on risk exposure reduction. Providing an industry leading opportunity to translate complex cybersecurity concepts into business-friendly information allowing to make informed decisions in line with our risk appetite

  • Cybersecurity Controls Design – starting with the current bank wide priority on Non-Financial Risk Optimisation (NFRO) programme, designing Procedures, Operating Instructions and Control Instances, expanding on the newly implemented Risk Taxonomy and Control Library. The efforts will continue to define and maintain a detailed Cybersecurity Controls Catalogue, continuously improving our controls design and implementation requirements

  • Metrics & Reporting – definition and management of Key Control Indicators and providing a ‘front-door’ service to Global Businesses, Functions and Regions for any queries related to KCIs and output of the new Cybersecurity Metrics dashboard

  • Continuous Control Monitoring – developing the approach, implementing and maintaining a process for ongoing control monitoring. Designing an approach for automated evidence collation to facilitate reviews from Chief Controls Office, Resilience Risk and Audit

  • Risk & Controls Strategy – embedding CRQ into wider Operational Risk Management Framework and controls ecosystem. Tying together all other components of the function into a cohesive strategy to ensure robust end to end control management and risk quantification

Our requirements

  • Post Graduate qualifications (quantitative MSc / PhD) in, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related. MSc in quantitative science is a must

  • Exposure to at least one of the following: operational risk modelling (preferably non-actuarial approaches), Bayesian Networks, Markov Decision Processes or Probabilistic Programming

  • Motivation to develop in the emerging field of quantitative cybersecurity risk modelling

  • Strong intellectual/analytical potential and willingness to the goal of extending the existing risk models and to perform original applied research in the field

  • Good understanding of probability theory, random variables and their distributions, monte-carlo simulations and inference algorithms

  • Experience in analysing big volumes of data, preferably with Spark. At least basic knowledge of SQL

  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with numpy, scipy, pandas, matplotlib

  • Practical working knowledge of some ML algorithms, working knowledge of at least one ML framework

  • Interest in MLOps

  • Basic git knowledge, Confluence, JIRA, understanding of agile methodologies

Optional

  • Past exposure to any of the following: probabilistic risk assessment, uncertainty quantification, operational risk modelling, reliability engineering, operational research, decision sciencesAny experience in using Bayesian Networks/Influence Diagrams/Markov Decision Processes, Bayesian inference methods, any experience with one of the following: TensorFlow Probability, pymc3, pyro, Stan, WinBUGS or similar
