About the project
HSBC Data & Architecture Office (DAO) promotes a data-driven culture across HSBC through our strategy of:
• Protect: To protect our data we need robust policies for data management and enhanced governance e.g. data that is consumed from a trusted source, meets quality standards, and complies with regulatory obligations.
• Connect: Move to a data-led culture through enhanced training including on the job opportunities. Our talent is the glue between protecting our data and unlocking value for our customers.
• Unlock. Value is unlocked when we deliver on the opportunities our well-managed data presents e.g. improving customer / colleague experience, increasing revenue, commercialising our data, optimising capital, enhancing risk management or reducing costs.
The Data & Analytics Architecture chapter brings together the business and data architects and ensures the necessary skills exist across the organisation to drive business and data change in a standardised and strategy way. The chapter ensures there is strong communication and understanding of the latest state of the reference material and standards.
Data Architecture assembles the appropriate resources to embed the standards for data architecture across the organisation, through leadership and governance. It provides the reference architecture for how to operate and interact with data, at HSBC. This includes the standards and governance of:
• Data Platforms
• Data Models
• Data Tooling
• Data Management and Governance
• Trusted Sources, Usage and Flow
• Data Quality and Integrity
The Data Architect primarily supports the Connect & Unlock pillars of the strategy.
Key priorities include:
• Support for the Metadata model to help deliver OCC Controls and Operational Resiliency
• Develop a thorough understanding of HSBC’s operational data
Chair the Enterprise Metadata Modelling Working Group (EMMWG)
Document EMMWG meetings and outcomes
Become an expert in the model’s content so that you can represent the model in various forums and answer detailed questions
Work across different initiatives that require modelling to advise what they need to do to meet their demand
Support and develop the EMMWG operating model
Evangelise across the bank so that stakeholders are aware of the EMM and their need to engage with it
Manage the EMM backlog and delivery cycles
Develop and enforce model standards alongside Business, Technical and Data Architecture team members.
Lead and own the development and implementation of architecture strategy and standards pertinent to the domain
Introduce new practices, processes, operating model, techniques, products, services, technologies and standards where needed against identified use cases, via the appropriate governance bodies
Act as the recognised data expert associated with the relevant domain
Accountable design authority for data decisions and leadership of the appropriate governance bodies
Stay abreast of technology trends and advise Data Architecture and the business about potential benefits/impacts
Provides motivational leadership, sets team performance expectations and monitors progress
Overall responsibility for supervising a department or a business unit/area team, or manages delivery for most complex assignments
Drive the EMMWG agenda
Encourage peers and more senior colleagues to deliver on tasks
Take the initiative on model governance and standards
Collaborate with projects that are using the model to understand their requirements and how the model can support their objectives
Thought leadership on how the model can be applied across or extended to support different use cases
Extensive knowledge of Operational Data domain, good understanding of data modelling and model types
Banking industry specific knowledge is not required but experience in process mapping, IT service chains and data lineage and other operational controls very important
The ability to lead peers and more senior colleagues in a collaborative endeavour where colleagues have other responsibilities and reporting lines
Abstract thinking and the ability to visualize concepts across multiple dimensions. The ability to model real data to test the viability of the model
The ability to contribute to projects’ solutions where relevant by imagining how data across the model can play into and solve problems
The ability to help business, technical and data architects to come to decisions that support the strategic direction.
The Enterprise Metadata Model practical knowledge and experience
Strong presentational skills to communicate complex ideas simply using tools such as powerpoint, word, email and messenger services to work effectively in global environment
