About the project

Wealth & Personal Banking (WPB) is leading the way in defining, developing and delivering mobile centred smart banking. It is a foundational (digitally-centred) proposition which can be harnessed by our markets in support of the Growth Agenda.

Our goal is to enable mobile-centred smart banking faster, more effectively and in a way that sets the standard of modern banking and paves the way for bank of the future.

• As an architect within Mobile Platform, you will work in a small team of architects designing capabilities for our Mobile Platform and providing consultancy for its adoption around the globe.

• Continual evolution of our Mobile Platform to ensure it stays up to date with industry practices.

• Solution design for new features / frameworks to meet the requirements of engineering teams building on top of the Mobile Platform.

• Input into the mobile technology strategy through trail, assessment and prototyping of technologies from the Technology Radar.

Your responsibilities

  • Participate in the continued development of architecture standards.

  • Ensure the design/solution is aligned with architecture standards, IT and business strategy, and meet business objectives.

  • Participate in the introduction of new techniques, products, services, technologies and standards where needed against identified use cases.

  • Stay abreast of mobile technology trends and advise IT and the business about potential benefits/impacts.

  • Provide a consultancy role to IT and business teams where appropriate.

  • Where appropriate, provide full life cycle architectural guidance to development teams and ensure quality technical deliverables.

  • Customer Focus – engages the customer, effectively communicates relevant information, products and services at the right time in an appropriate style. Engages confidently with customers, colleagues and stakeholders.

  • Deliver fair outcomes for our customers and ensure own conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.

  • Actively promote the benefits of architecture, accepted best practice techniques, standards and tools to other areas of the Group and external suppliers where necessary.

  • Perform architecture reviews on aligned Global Business / Global Function systems and ensure both appropriate peer review and Solution Architecture Board (SAB) endorsement is obtained.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant internal instructions (Functional Instruction Manual (FIMs), Group Standard Manual (GSMs), circulars) and external regulatory requirements, including the management of operational risk and adherence to the Group’s standards of ethical behaviour.

Our requirements

  • Passion about mobile technology and delivering a high quality product.

  • Experience of evaluating and providing practical architectural trade-offs for resource constrained devices while providing a first class user experience.

  • Be able to quickly estimate data size, usage and throughput including such areas as logging requirements

  • Understanding of database schemas and their potential impact on mobile

  • Understanding of system capacity impact e.g. what mobile considerations need to be taken into account when supporting a highly-available systems

  • Practical knowledge of reactive techniques in minimising state dependency e.g. when a connection drops during a transaction

  • Hands-on experience of designing resilient, reliable and scalable mobile applications e.g. a user action should never be lost

  • Demonstrable decision making techniques for off-the-shelf vs open-source vs implement your own components

  • Clear understanding of the evolution of design patterns in the mobile domain - consider MVC, MVP, MVVM and VIPER

  • Providing strategies on when to refactor architectural debt in the context of mobile OS refreshes

  • Present convincing technical points of view as to when and why a technology should be adopted

  • Experience of the latest mobile industry practices to identify and encourage improvements within the existing mobile architecture

  • Past working experience as an Engineer, Architect, Solutions Analyst

  • Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered

  • Experience of making timely and rational decisions, based on relevant information and experience

  • Experience of planning and prioritising their own time effectively, aware of their responsibilities and committed to delivering these efficiently

  • Supported project teams/managers, showing an understanding of the basic principles of project management

  • The ability to understand and interpret straightforward financial data
